What would it be like to go on a vacation in space? While we – not long ago – could only dream of partying in zero gravity, that dream might soon become reality if the plans to open the world's first-ever space hotel in 2027 play out without any interruptions.
In 2019, the first plans for a space hotel were announced by the Gateway Foundation. The hotel would float above the Earth's atmosphere, and would act as a cruise-ship-style resort, only in space.
The concept has since progressed into something more concrete, and now plans to open the hotel – which will be christened Voyager Station – in 2027 are right on schedule.
A far-out vacation.
The hotel will be constructed by the Orbital Assembly Corporation – a construction company specializing in space structures founded by John Blincow, who is also the person in charge of the Gateway Foundation.
On the inside, the hotel will be designed to look very much like the interiors of Earth-bound luxury resorts, except that visitors will now be able to do a number of things that they could never have done on Earth.

For example, gazing out through windows at planet Earth or far out into the depths of space, and taking part in reduced-gravity activities (I don't know what those might be, but I imagine it involves being able to jump very high).
Judging by the concept photos, Voyager Station will come complete with bars, restaurants, gyms, and other recreational facilities, while rooms will be presented exactly how earthlings would expect when visiting a posh hotel. There are, however, plans to at least introduce some space-inspired novelties, such as freeze-dried ice cream.

Tim Alatorre, the senior design architect at Orbital Assembly Corporation told CNN that inspiration for the hotel was derived from the Stanley Kubrick classic 2001: A Space Odyssey, as in the film was a representation of "almost a blueprint of what not to do".
Instead of the cold and drab interiors of the space station and ships in the movie, the hotel will feature much more ambient interiors that will make visitors feel right at home.

As for the engineering aspects of the hotel, Voyager Station will provide artificial gravity via a spinning wheel that makes up the circumference of the circular construct. The wheel will consist of 24 modules connected to the structure via elevator shafts.
Through rotations, the wheel creates simulated gravity which will allow occupants to function and behave as if they were on Earth.
The areas toward the middle of the station however, are where visitors will experience the least amount of gravity. You've probably seen this concept in movies, but it'll no doubt be pretty cool to experience the concept for yourself if you ever do get the opportunity.

Despite some hindrances caused by the pandemic, construction of the hotel will begin in 2026, with a completion date scheduled for the very next year – extremely ambitious, but highly exciting.
"We're trying to make the public realize that this golden age of space travel is just around the corner, " Blincow said. "It's coming. It's coming fast."
And as for how they plan to get people onto Voyager Station, Blincow said that there were plans to work with commercial spaceflight companies such as Elon Musk's SpaceX to transport visitors from the ground up to the hotel and back.
"We cannot call SpaceX our partner, but in the future, we look forward to working with them," he said.
So far, no room rates have been advertised, although I imagine the whole experience won't come cheap judging by the astronomical cost of a ticket to ride on a Virgin Galactic suborbital spaceplane – a whopping US$250,000.
Guess I'll need to work extremely hard and save up if I'm ever going to experience taking a dip in a jacuzzi high up above the Earth's atmosphere.
